The Chicago Cubs will be without second baseman Nico Hoerner and prospect Matt Shaw for the season-opening games in Japan against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hoerner, who underwent surgery on his right forearm in October to repair a flexor tendon injury, is continuing his rehabilitation in Arizona. Shaw, sidelined by an oblique injury sustained during spring training, also will miss the Tokyo Series. With their absences, veteran Justin Turner is expected to start at third base while Jon Berti or Vidal Brujan may cover second.
After the series in Japan, the Cubs are set to face the Arizona Diamondbacks, providing additional time for both players to recover ahead of the domestic Opening Day scheduled for March 27, 2025. Manager Craig Counsell has expressed optimism about Hoerner’s recovery progress, underscoring the team’s depth and adaptability as they adjust their roster amid these setbacks.
