A new AP-NORC poll released on April 1, 2025, reveals that an increasing number of Republicans now support U.S. involvement in negotiating permanent ceasefires in both Ukraine and Gaza. Approximately 60% of Republicans say it is crucial for the U.S. to help facilitate a permanent ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine—a significant jump from 40% last year. The poll also highlights robust backing among Republicans for former President Donald Trump’s approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with about 80% expressing approval compared to 40% of Democrats who favor President Joe Biden’s approach.
In addition to these findings, the poll underscores a broader debate within the party. While many Republicans favor reducing U.S. support for Ukraine and pressuring allies to take a more independent role in global affairs, there remains a faction that feels Trump's efforts have not met his early promises to quickly resolve ongoing conflicts. These results reflect a growing shift towards a foreign policy that emphasizes ceasefire negotiations and a more restrained U.S. role abroad, alongside a renewed focus on domestic priorities.
