Since January 2025, cybersecurity experts have warned that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, is significantly undermining federal cybersecurity. Key actions such as eliminating critical positions, canceling contracts, and dismantling essential safeguards have resulted in unauthorized server connections, unsecured communications, and breaches that expose sensitive personal data, including financial and medical records of veterans and the elderly.
Additional concerns have been raised by recent revelations. For example, on April 2, a Reuters article detailed how a DOGE official in the Department of Justice, Christopher Stanley, boasted about past hacking activities and distributing pirated software, despite retaining an active security clearance. Meanwhile, other reports note that mass firings—especially on Friday nights—appear to be part of a broader politically motivated purge, further weakening agencies like the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) and raising fears of a looming national cybersecurity crisis.
