Climate change is intensifying the global water cycle, leading to both prolonged droughts and destructive downpours. Rising temperatures from fossil fuel combustion allow the atmosphere to hold more moisture, which in turn fuels more severe droughts as well as powerful storms. For example, Storm Daniel in 2023 caused catastrophic flooding in Libya, as heavy rains overwhelmed local infrastructure.
Recent events across the globe underscore this trend. In Europe, areas like Spain have experienced stark swings—from severe drought that uncovered ancient reservoirs to sudden, destructive floods that disrupted communities. Similarly, torrential rains in Argentina resulted in deadly floods in March 2025, while cities such as Copenhagen are adapting by upgrading stormwater systems and repurposing urban spaces to mitigate the impacts of extreme rainfall.
