AI Enhances Natural Disaster Response in Cities

AI is increasingly used in urban areas to enhance forecasting, real-time responses, and post-disaster assessments as cities face escalating natural hazards and growing populations.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly playing a critical role in urban disaster management. In December 2024, the UN’s Global Initiative on Resilience to Natural Hazards through AI Solutions brought together public agencies, private enterprises, and technology innovators to refine AI forecasting models and improve real-time response systems. Notable examples include advanced satellite imagery analysis and predictive models that help determine hurricane landfalls, as well as post-disaster assessments that guide relief efforts.

Recent projects further illustrate the expanding use of AI in disaster scenarios. For instance, following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Mandalay, Myanmar, relief organizations used a custom AI model developed by Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab and Planet Labs to quickly assess building damage (AP, April 2025). Similarly, Dryad Networks introduced the AI-based drone Silvaguard in Germany for faster wildfire detection (AP, March 2025), while Reuters reported on Europe’s enhanced flood warning systems that, despite improvements, continue to face challenges in communication and data quality. These initiatives underscore a growing global commitment to harnessing AI for more resilient urban disaster management.
