NASA's SPHEREx observatory is scheduled to launch this Friday from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, marking a major step in its two-year mission to map 450 million galaxies in infrared. The mission, set to begin at 10:09 p.m. ET, aims to shed light on galaxy formation, the origins of water, and the rapid expansion of the universe following the Big Bang.

Over the course of its operation, SPHEREx will repeatedly survey the entire sky to collect valuable spectral data that will help scientists refine their understanding of fundamental cosmic processes. Although supplemental reports have mentioned potential launch scenarios for early 2025, the core plan as detailed in NASA's official description remains unchanged with this week’s liftoff.
