Big Tech in 2025: AI Chips, Antitrust Battles, and Culture Clashes

In 2025, big tech faces a dual challenge: developing custom AI chips to sharpen competitive edges and navigating heightened antitrust and cultural scrutiny from U.S. and EU regulators.

Tech giants are gearing up for transformative changes in 2025 as they accelerate efforts to develop custom AI chips. Companies like Meta, Amazon, and notably OpenAI—with partners Broadcom and TSMC—are moving to design in-house AI chips to reduce reliance on Nvidia. As of February 2025, reports indicate that OpenAI is finalizing its first custom chip design, aiming to enhance its capacity for training advanced AI models.

Regulatory scrutiny is intensifying on multiple fronts. The U.S. government is considering radical measures against Google following a court ruling that identified monopoly practices in its online search market. At the same time, the European Union is enforcing the Digital Markets Act through targeted actions, such as revising App Store rules for Apple and adjustments to Meta’s platform practices, as observed in late March 2025. Meanwhile, the incoming Trump administration is expected to challenge perceived conservative bias on major platforms, setting the stage for culture wars in the tech sector.
