Meta to Resume AI Training Using Public EU Content

Meta has restarted AI training using publicly available content from adult EU users after a pause over privacy concerns, with measures in place to notify users and allow them to opt out.

Meta announced on April 14, 2025, that it will resume training its AI models using publicly available content from adult users in the European Union. After previously pausing due to privacy concerns raised by advocacy group NOYB and its leader Max Schrems, the company reactivated this initiative following confirmation from a panel of EU privacy regulators that its approach complied with legal standards.

The training will utilize public posts, comments, and interactions with the Meta AI assistant, while excluding private messages and content from users under 18. Meta plans to notify EU users about the data collection and provide an opt-out option via an objection form. This practice aligns with measures taken by other tech companies like Google and OpenAI to responsibly use public user data for AI development.
