Cerebras Systems, an AI chip innovator known for its dinner plate–sized chips, and Canadian startup Ranovus have secured a $45 million contract from the U.S. military. Awarded by DARPA on April 1, 2025, the deal aims to integrate Cerebras’s powerful AI chips with Ranovus’s advanced optical networking technology to deliver faster, more power-efficient data transfer. This collaboration is set to develop computing systems capable of real-time simulation of complex battlefields.

The project will see both companies bring their new, unreleased technologies to the table, with the goal of achieving systems that operate 150 times faster than current benchmarks while significantly reducing power consumption. By challenging established leaders in the AI chip market, such as Nvidia, this strategic partnership underscores a clear drive for innovation in defense and simulation technology.
