ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, is set to invest over $12 billion in AI infrastructure during 2025. According to reports from January 2025, the company will allocate approximately $5.5 billion for AI chip purchases in China and around $6.8 billion for upgrading its foundational model training capabilities overseas using Nvidia chips. Domestic operations will rely on Chinese suppliers such as Huawei and Cambricon for about 60% of its semiconductor needs, while the remaining chips are to be sourced under U.S. export controls.
This significant push comes amid intense competition with tech giants like Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent, and against a backdrop of geopolitical challenges, including U.S. pressures and export restrictions. In addition to strengthening its AI capabilities, ByteDance has rolled out its AI chatbot Doubao in China, further bolstering its position in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
