Russian forces are launching an intense campaign in the Kursk region to reclaim territory that Ukrainian troops seized in an unexpected incursion last August. The original capture of about 1,400 square kilometers was intended as a bargaining chip in future peace talks. Now, bolstered by heavy reinforcements — including North Korean soldiers — Russian efforts are renewing as they target strategic rural areas.

Reports from war bloggers and local sources indicate that more than 300 Ukrainian soldiers are holed up in the Gornalsky St. Nicholas Belogorsky monastery, using underground passages to receive supplies and reinforcements. Fighting has also been concentrated near villages such as Gornal, Guevo, and Oleshnya close to the Sumy region border, raising concerns that a loss of these key positions could force Ukraine into a tighter defensive stance.
