WHO Reports 74% Global Rise in Palliative Care Demand

A recent study published in The Lancet Global Health reveals that over the past 30 years the global need for palliative care has increased by 74%, affecting approximately 73.5 million people as of 2021. This surge is most pronounced in low- and middle-income countries, which now account for about 80% of those requiring such care. The increase is mainly attributed to population growth and a higher prevalence of noncommunicable diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and dementia.

In related developments, the World Health Organization has highlighted the severe shortfall in access to quality palliative care. Back in October 2021, WHO noted that only one in ten people in need actually received proper care, prompting global initiatives to better assess and improve palliative care services. These efforts aim to address the growing challenges as the demand is projected to continue rising in the coming decades.
