Cruise is set to return to the streets of Sunnyvale and Mountain View this fall after pausing operations following a robotaxi incident in October 2023. Initially, the company will deploy manually driven vehicles for mapping purposes, collecting essential data for the next phase of supervised autonomous testing with up to five vehicles.

This phased approach marks an important step in Cruise’s efforts to reintroduce autonomous vehicle technology in the Bay Area. By restarting its mapping operations in 2024, Cruise aims to ensure a safe transition towards driverless testing, addressing concerns raised by previous incidents and reinforcing its commitment to enhanced safety and reliability.
